Jan Pieter van Voorst van Beest

A Pownal , Maine resident for over 30 years, Jan Pieter van Voorst van Beest is a Fine Arts photographer. He studied photography at the Portland School of Art, and at the Maine Photographic Workshops with Joyce Tenneson and Arnold Newman.

Significant portions of his work can be classified as street/ documentary and portrait photography . From time to time he strays into other areas of photography such as landscape and alternative printing processes. His work has been published in a variety of magazines and books such as “Black & White Magazine, the Photo Review, Dance Teacher Magazine, Cadence Magazine, the Portland Magazine , Words & Images, and recently in the book “Walking” by Thoreau and published by Tilbury House Publishers as well as in the new book by Down East Publishing: “Maine, Life in a Day”.

His work has been exhibited nationally and internationally. The Portland Museum of Art, The Bowdoin College Museum, the University of Southern Maine and the Art Gallery at the University of New England are among the many places his work was shown.

In 2009 he co-authored the book : “New Mainers, Portraits of our Immigrant Neighbors”, which was published at Tilbury House Publishers. His work can be seen on his website:
